The Importance of Taking a Break During the Festive Season

There are countless countdowns everywhere, whether it’s for Christmas or the new year, and yet, when the festive season happens, it always comes as a bit of a surprise.

Some people experience a touch of panic and get lost in the holiday rush. Feeling unprepared and out of time can be debilitating emotions. They can ruin what should ultimately be a period of introspection and recovery prior to the beginning of the coming year.

So, regardless of your cultural, religious, or personal beliefs, taking a break during the festive season is essential because:

1. You need to slow down and recover from the stress of everyday life.

Many people still struggle to achieve that elusive work-life balance, with typical workdays lasting eight hours or more. Add to this the daily commute, household chores, and family obligations, and you get a seriously stressed individual.

During the holidays, many people frequently feel as though they have too much to do with so little time. But even though reducing your regular work hours isn’t possible, it’s crucial that you take advantage of the holiday break. The festive season offers the perfect opportunity for you to slow down, rest, and recover.

2. It’s time to reconnect with yourself and indulge in some self-care.

Now it’s time to go deeper. Reconnecting with yourself requires focus. Let go of those self or societally imposed holiday obligations.

Let your mind and body rest. Indulge in some self-care. Do those things that bring you joy: go on a leisurely stroll, read your favourite book, enjoy a meal, or chat with a friend.

Get a massage, sweat it out in a sauna. Go for a jog, hit the gym, or take an overseas holiday.

Just take a break, then come back energised with a fresh perspective and maybe even concrete plans to live better. This way, you can regain focus and equilibrium in your life.

3. Reflection can help you regain your creativity and zest for life.

Ever feel you’re stuck in a rut? Sometimes, all you need to regain your old enthusiasm for life is to take time off and distance yourself from everything.

When you give yourself time off to reflect, you’ll realise what you’ve achieved. If you feel you failed at certain things, now’s the perfect opportunity to revise your plans or make a brand-new start. Commit to those plans and take concrete steps to achieve them when your holiday is over.

The best is yet to come

While the gifts and glittery trappings of the holidays add a sense of magic and joy to the festive season, they’re not all that this period is about.

At the heart of the festive season is hope — the belief that things will be better and that the best is yet to come.

And it all starts with making time for yourself.

When you’re happy, there’s no limit to what you can give to others.

Happy holidays!
